21.08.202603:54:35UTC+00Indonesia Posts Record Current Account Deficit

Indonesia’s current account deficit widened sharply to USD 12.49 billion in Q2 2026, up from USD 2.89 billion in the same period a year earlier. This was the largest current account shortfall on record, equal to 3.3% of GDP. The deterioration was driven primarily by a steep narrowing of the trade surplus, which fell to USD 1.32 billion from USD 10.52 billion in Q2 2025, largely reflecting a surge in imports amid higher oil prices linked to the Middle East conflict.

The services deficit also widened, rising to USD 5.98 billion from USD 5.30 billion a year earlier. By contrast, the primary income deficit edged down slightly to USD 9.67 billion from USD 9.79 billion, while the secondary income surplus increased modestly to USD 1.75 billion from USD 1.68 billion. For 2025 as a whole, the current account gap had narrowed significantly to USD 1.25 billion, or 0.1% of GDP, from USD 8.58 billion in 2024.
